An interview with Hashini Peiris – The owner of Talia Beauty Salon

I’m Hashini Peiris, a professional bridal makeup artist living in Colombo. Since I was little, I’ve had a love for artistic and beautiful things. Through years of experimenting with makeup, bringing together friends and family, I realized that this was the profession I should choose as my career.

Before I came into this field, I was working a 9 am – 5 pm job in the banking sector. While I was in that job, I started doing hair and makeup for my friends because of my passion. I posted photos of what I did on Facebook. Seeing those, I started getting inquiries from my friends and family. With all this, I decided to start my own brand for hair and makeup. I chose the name ‘Talia’ for my brand from a movie. ‘Talia’ means a goddess, so I used that name for my business.
A few years later, in 2020, I attended a masterclass by French makeup artist Florian Hurel, and also in 2022, I attended a bridal masterclass with Samaira Sandu in Mumbai.
Later, I understood that the main reason I entered this bridal makeup field was the emotional bond with the bride. Finally, in this field, I was able to build my own clientele.

As a bridal artist, we face certain challenges. Every wedding is unique; each bride’s requirements are different, so no two weddings have the same approach.
The brides who come to me are different from each other; understanding their needs and their vision is something that must be done very strategically, especially when they don’t have a proper plan and have high expectations.
Another challenge is giving them their makeup the way they want it. There are times when they themselves don’t know what they want, but we have to be able to understand their ideas and, accordingly, enhance their features beautifully, to complement them and make them radiant.

While respecting older makeup trends, it’s very important to do this by also using new trends. Because then both sides are balanced. Sometimes brides want to look radiant according to older makeup trends, and sometimes they want to look radiant according to the latest trends. To know these things accurately, I ask them questions properly and understand those things, so I can balance these things correctly.
I believe that every challenge I have faced and continue to face in this field is an opportunity for me to understand more and move forward. That’s one thing I love about this profession. Is there anything more valuable for a makeup artist than seeing a bride, after my styling, go in front of the mirror and her face light up with happiness when she sees herself?
I have a lot of experience working with many brides, and I have a humble pride about that. Every bride gives me new energy, a new story, and a new goal. It’s hard to say exactly the number of brides who have come to me, but every bride who comes to me is special to me. Because each one of them is unique and they all give me different memories and ideas in my profession, and the trust they place in me is very special.

As the first step in styling a bride, what I do is try to understand the bride, meaning I ask her questions. About the dress she is wearing for her wedding, the wedding theme, and things like the vibe she expects at her wedding. From things like these, I can easily understand her idea, meaning it’s easy to understand what she wants.

I always try to apply makeup according to her unique features, her skin tone, and her personality. Whether the makeup she expects is natural, glamorous, or bold, I always strive to style her so that she can see herself in the best way possible. And also, I always focus on ensuring her makeup is long-lasting, because her appearance should remain unchanged from the beginning of the wedding ceremony until the end, so she doesn’t need to worry about touch-ups, and another thing is that she should feel comfortable in that makeup.

Also, I give them advice regarding skincare, and I do this consistently leading up to the wedding day. About what kind of makeup is best for photographs, how to keep the makeup looking fresh from the morning until the evening on the wedding day.
The most important thing is that I want the bride to feel beautiful through my makeup, and also to feel self-confidence inside her on that day and to feel comfortable. I feel I have given my best when I can see from a bride’s smile, as she goes in front of the mirror and sees herself based on how she feels that day.

The first advice I give is to work according to your own vision, meaning there can be new trends, and everyone can have opinions like ‘take the wedding this way, do the wedding that way,’ but my view is that your wedding day should reflect who you are. Also, focus on things that you and your partner can be happy with, and plan your wedding ceremony around those things.
Planning a wedding ceremony is a very complex thing, but in that matter, you need to be very flexible. Everything may not happen perfectly, that’s okay. Because everything we plan may not happen as we think, but you should plan everything as well as you can. If you feel a small change is needed, change it, because even a small change can make a beautiful difference. So what I’m saying is, plan everything beautifully, if there are mistakes in your plans, have compassion for yourself without getting discouraged, because such things can happen in our lives.

I always tell the service providers I work with that there’s a reason you always hire professional vendors for your wedding ceremony, so we must always give you our best. To give you our best within our profession, we need a little space from you. If you give us those two things—your trust and that space—you yourselves will be amazed to see everything flowing so beautifully and successfully.

Platforms like Poruwa.lk provide opportunities for Sri Lankans to easily find suitable partners, and the process happens very conveniently. From what I’ve often seen, the beginning of beautiful love stories lies in such services, because technology provides an opportunity to meet, and we see young men and women who never thought they would meet through such means starting a beautiful marital journey. I’m truly happy about how much technology can do.
And all this happens based on the matter of love. The Poruwa.lk service helps Sri Lankans looking for partners in different places to find suitable people and as a bridal makeup artist, I make that beautiful day even more beautiful through my styling.

I offer a 5% discount on bridal dressing packages for customers who come through Poruwa.lk. This discount is valid from December 10th until the end of January 2026. When they come to me, they must bring the Poruwa.lk magazine as well.

First of all, I must thank my clients; I really must thank my brides who trusted me and entrusted me with their most beautiful day. Because they trusted me and made me a part of their wedding day. The trust they placed in me and the support they gave me while doing this are very valuable things in my life. I am very grateful for the opportunity to beautify them on their valuable day.

To be honest, I must remember with love my friends who were with me during both the ups and downs of my life. They were always my strength; they encouraged me, even at times when I questioned myself whether I could do this, they urged me on, saying, ‘You can do it.

And also, I am very thankful for my excellent team, who are with me in these matters. The support they provide, from properly guiding a bride on her wedding day to ensuring a successful unfolding wedding, to planning every aspect of the bride’s styling perfectly and managing those things correctly, is invaluable. Without my team being with me, I wouldn’t have the ability to successfully provide my service to each bride according to their respective needs.

Finally, I say that I am very grateful for the opportunity I received, that I got to do what I love in my life. I am very satisfied with my professional journey of becoming a bridal makeup artist, and I look forward to continuing a beautiful journey in the future within this profession with great enthusiasm.
