1. Could you give us a brief introduction about yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My full name is Ann Helan Orancy Siriwardhana. I entered the profession of cake designing at the age of 14, because I am someone who likes to use my time effectively. So, while I was still attending school, I started learning in this field by going to classes on the weekends. As for my family details, my husband and I have three children, two sons and a daughter. I receive a great deal of support from them for my business. So, that’s my current situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Can you briefly explain how you entered this field?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I mentioned in the previous question, I entered this profession at the age of 14. I first joined cookery classes, and when I participated, I realized that I had a high level of talent for these things because I scored high marks. After that, I moved from cookery into the field of cake designing. I had good teachers who helped me do those things well. While I was learning about cakes, I secured first place in almost everything I did. Initially, I did this as a hobby, but an opportunity came to continue it alongside my talent, and I developed a passion for it. With that passion, I made the decision to continue, and it became my self-employment. For this, I received great support from all my family members, including my siblings. Also, it was my mother-in-law who named this showroom “Sugar Frill Cakes by Orancy.” With the support of my family and my husband, I have come this far on such a successful journey within my field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. What have been the challenges and experiences you’ve encountered so far in the field of cake designing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of challenges, I faced many challenges while working in this field. When I entered this field, I had a great responsibility. At that time, there weren’t many people making cakes like there are now, including my teachers. Among them, I was allowed to make tall cakes, small cakes, and floral cakes; I got to make cakes in every aspect. That was a big challenge for me, and I also felt a great sense of responsibility about it. Another special thing is that the first cake I ever made was a 10-foot-tall cake. Making that cake was a huge challenge and a big responsibility because the very idea of making a cake that tall is a major challenge. The cake must not collapse when cut, and there are other things like that that you need to pay attention to. Taking on such responsibilities and doing something like this as a woman is extremely challenging, which is why everyone told me I was very talented. Also, my clients trust me, give me these challenges, and allow me to continue this work. With that trust, I can continue this journey. Their trust in me is very important. Sometimes, we have to create different models for cakes. Broadly speaking, we have to create models like the Taj Mahal, a castle, or a palace. The patterns for each of these are different. To elaborate further, these creations need to be done in various styles like traditional, western, and Indian. Working according to a theme for each one is a big challenge. In doing these things, the customer must be satisfied, the cake must be delivered on time, the colour themes must be correct, and the carvings must be precise. When all these things come together, this job becomes a collection of many responsibilities. Only when these things are done correctly is a cake beautifully created. Another thing I should mention is that when I started this at age 14, I wasn’t doing such large creations. At that time, I did various creations like masks and mermaids, and participated in exhibitions held by my teachers. In those exhibitions, I very often won first place. I never fell to second place. It is because of that craftsmanship and my talent that I have come this far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. How many wedding cake creations have you completed to date, and which cake model is the most special among them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s difficult to give a specific number of my cake creations because I have done a large number of them. However, speaking of the cakes that remain in my memory, first is the 22-foot-tall cake I made for a Guinness attempt; that’s a cake I remember well. The other cake is the one I created for my daughter’s wedding. For that, I created 276,000 icing flowers. That was the biggest challenge I took on in my professional life. So, my daughter’s cake is the most beautifully done cake for me. That cake was a very big challenge because it’s not a cake that just anyone could make easily; it was a cake 7 feet wide and 20 feet tall. Around the entire circumference of that 7-foot-wide round cake, I placed icing flowers, and it took 276,000 flowers. That is the largest cake I’ve made recently; it’s been about two years since I made that cake. It took me around three months to make that cake. I mean, it took that long just to make the flowers, but I built up the cake itself in about 10 days. Besides this, I also recently made a beautiful cake for my eldest son, and for my second son, I made an 18-foot-tall cake that was entirely covered in icing and designed to be pulled out (for a reveal). I think that was the first time a pull-out cake was made in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. In your opinion, how much does the couple’s cake model contribute to the beauty of their wedding day?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, talking about that, in my opinion, a wedding is made beautiful by the completed cake. Some people might think that making a cake is a frivolous task, that spending money on it is a waste. But often, this cake model becomes a topic of conversation for everyone at the entire wedding. I mean, many people often say things like, “Oh, they had such a beautiful cake, you couldn’t even tell it was icing!” People talk about other things at weddings, too, of course, but when it comes to the cake, it’s very special, and it gets talked about the most. And that’s how it should be. Often, even in magazines, if there’s a picture of a cake, it gets a lot of attention. I’m not saying other things don’t, but cakes receive more attention. Another thing is, often if the couple is tall, cutting a small cake looks odd. So, the advice I have on this matter is that a wedding cake creation should be higher than the couple’s eye level. Otherwise, it feels more like cutting a birthday cake. A birthday cake is something that comes once a year, but a wedding cake is something that comes, usually, only once in a lifetime. So, I believe that’s something that needs to be done right. Among Asian countries, Sri Lanka is famous for destination weddings. Why do many people come to Sri Lanka for destination weddings? Because we do weddings beautifully here. Creating a cake model is not easy. It takes considerable time and effort, and sometimes we work even harder than we are paid, because we have to maintain the high standard we have built. Often, when people see a creation, they now know and recognise it as my work. I’m very proud of that. A wedding cake adds immense value to a wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. When clients entrust their wedding cake creation to you, what kind of support do you provide them, and how can someone contact you for a cake creation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once a cake creation is entrusted to me, the responsibility is mine from that moment until the creation is finished and handed back to the client. Even after the cake is handed over, if any damage occurs before it is cut, we also take responsibility for that. So, truly, from the moment we start making a cake until it is finished and handed back to the client, we have a responsibility for it. Because when someone spends a certain amount of money, they expect the best service and the best cake. We need to make sure the cake is delivered exactly when they need it. We can’t say we’ll bring the cake later because it wasn’t ready on time. If any such lapse occurs, we must have the ability to quickly restore it to its original condition. We had one such incident once. Someone accidentally bumped into and slightly damaged a cake that had been set up, due to their unawareness. In that situation, we worked back-to-back to fix it. In situations like that, we must take full responsibility. Generally, when we pay for something, it’s only if it’s good, so they expect the best service for the amount they spend. That’s what a client expects. Fortunately, we haven’t had any such lapses on our part; everything happens correctly. Some days, I don’t get to sleep, working from morning until evening, because there’s a responsibility to get these things done correctly. We don’t just take on the responsibility for the main cake model itself. We also handle the small cake pieces we give out on the wedding day, the “giveaways” as they’re also called. We work very hard on those things, too. We put in a huge effort to ensure those things are of good quality and wrapped well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I especially want to remind my staff with respect. They give me great support and a lot of encouragement to accomplish all of this. At this moment, I also respectfully remember my clients. Thank you very much for trusting me and coming to me. Even one word from any one of them, even a comment they make, is enough for me. I extend my respect to all of them. In addition, the places where I buy supplies for making cakes also provide me with quality goods as I need. I remember them at this time as well.
